Can She Do It?

The other day as I painted some Tau Firewarriors quietly at the dinner table, my wife informed me that she's set her sights on a new goal: Beating me at my own game.

Clearly the gauntlet had been thrown, and I could not back down from such a challenge. Prepare yourselves! It is time to choose a side! Are you Team Darksol, or Team Wifey?

The Mission: Capture and Control
Deployment: Dawn of War

Katie chose my beloved Dark Angels, playing them as normal Space Marines. Everything you see is WYSIWYG with the exception of the Termie Assault Cannon. She couldn't afford one, so it counts as a normal Storm Bolter- Power Fist combo. She'd also read my recent SM Librarian post and wanted to put that learning to the test. Her powers? Null Zone and The Avenger.

My army of choice would be Chaos Space Marines. She's new to the game, so I thought I'd keep things MEQ on both sides for simplicity's sake. Chaos Lord has standard Twin-Linked Bolter and Power Weapon. Thousand Sons Sorcerer has Doombolt. The Rhino does not have a Havoc launcher (couldn't afford it). The 5-man in the back is a unit of Chosen with 4 of them having Power Weapons and the other having a Meltagun.

I win the roll-off, and cede first turn to her. She chooses the above corner, and sets up her Tactical Squad around her objective with an attached Captain.

Her Scout Squad is deployed just to the left of that (after I had deployed my side).

I am going for a very aggressive tactic from the beginning, and so have deployed my objective relatively close to hers. My Chaos Marines with Glory Icon set up around it. Thousand Sons in the Rhino, and Lord in the back.

We're ready to go.

Aspiring Sorcerer Tekmet's transmission to Champion of Khorne: Memnar,
Dated 1.065.322:

Lord Brahm's presence is insufferable, and my talent wilts under his command. Today we engaged some more of the Emperor's dogs. It is strange that I did not see you among our ranks this day; they are your favored prey. No doubt because your god believes their skulls worth more, or some such nonsense? I had at least been afforded the use of our Rhino. Out the window I could see the lay of the land. The world was sickeningly colorful; a healthy kind of sick. My retinue had been sluggish of late. Must remember to look into cause later... forgive me, I ramble.

Katie's Librarian and Assault Squad enter the field near her Scouts and move forward. Some rolls for night-fighting from her Scout squad fail, and it is my turn.

Rhino forward, CSM forward. The Lord hangs back for the Chosen to arrive, then attaches to their unit. My initial idea here is to throw out the Rhino for her to focus on. The Thousand Sons will pop out rapid-firing while the CSM move unmolested forward to hopefully take the objective. The Lord and Chosen with Meltagun are going to attempt to counter her Terminator Squad.

So far, she appears to be taking the bait. her Assault Squad moves forward alone, and a few shots are fired at the Rhino to no avail. Bolters can't touch AV11.

On my turn, the Thousand Sons come out (perhaps a bit prematurely) and utterly destroy the Assault Squad with rapid firing Sorcerous Bolts. My Sorcerer's Doombolt is nullified by the Librarian's Psychic Hood. CSM and Chosen advance. The Rhino moves forward in order to get directly between her Terminators/Tactical Squad and my Thousand Sons. The Thousand Sons are my best anti-Space Marine I have.

Our time upon us, we exited our transport in order to neutralize their close-combat specialists. It was no challenge, though I felt an odd and familiar tugging through the Warp. Another presence denied me access to the twisting energies. This would be remedied in short order. How else can I be expected to do my work? Feh. Are you still incapacitated? I was told your system shut down in order to purge a strange toxin.

Katie's Terminators rush the empty Rhino. 1 Glancing Hit and 5 Penetrating Hits. Crazy enough, the Glancing Hit causes an Immobilized, and all 5 Penetrating Hits roll 1's and 2's! Bad dice!

Lots of stuff going on here. It's the bottom of the Third Turn. My CSM advance and rapid fire into the Librarian. He cannot stand up to the massed Bolter fire. My Sorcerer, now free from meddling Psychic Hoods, fails his Psychic Test! Thankfully, only rolling an 11 and not getting a Perils of the Warp. The Thousand Sons fire into the Tactical Squad, causing minimal casualties due to Cover Saves. My Chosen and Lord successfully assault her Terminators after missing (!) the Meltagun shot. Tragedy strikes as I roll like an all-time loser and only cause one wound. She claims 4. The dice have spoken.

In Turn 4, her Scouts claim a Thousand Son and her Tactical Squad takes aim also at the Thousand Sons, to no effect. Bad rolling is on both sides, at least. My Lord claims 2 more Terminators, but takes a wound himself (from the Sergeant) and loses his last Chosen.

My CSM press forward and annihilate the Scout Squad. The Thousand Sons reduce the Tactical Squad to nothing and cause a wound on the Captain thanks to some bad armour save rolls. The Lord fails spectacularly to cause a single wound, then recieves a Power Fist to the noggin. Instant Death!

They fell like flies, Memnar! I laughed aloud that you might hear what you were missing, but alas! That one hideous thing you craved more than the skulls of our former brethren came to pass while we fought that day. The great Lord Brahm is no more; struck down by a loyalist's powered fist. Oh the crimson and pink spray! His revolting and continually mocking face was obliterated in exactly the fashion that you used to tell us it would... only not by your hands. You have been denied, my friend. I wonder if Lord Brahm's last thoughts were regarding your strange absence. Anyway, despite this setback, the original plan still moved forward without him. Is it possible something you ate disagreed with you? I do hope your condition wasn't inflicted.

Turn 5, Katie's Captain amazingly stands and shoots! He is defiant to the last. The Storm Bolter does nothing. Her Terminators turn their attention back to the Rhino. She really hates that Rhino, but again fails to kill it.

My thousand Sons put the Captain to bed, and I move the CSM to take the objective. At this point, my plan is to intercept the Terminators in close combat with the Thousand Sons to prevent them from contesting the objective ... but I decide to lay into them with the CSM Bolters anyways (assuming I won't do much) and annihilate them both!

The last of the foe vanquished, we set to our work. This world was now defenseless and it's burning destruction would serve as a death toll to the Hive Worlds that depend on its constant supply of food.

With Lord Brahm dead, the great Warmaster's Council set to assigning a replacement. There was much talk of you, Memnar. I imagine if you had strode into the meeting with fresh Marine helms hanging from your loin-chain you would have garnered much praise and support. So fortuitous for me that only your absence was noted. The Council's selection was for someone much more reliable. I hope you will attend next week's raid. We assault Cirinth Prime. Do wake soon, won't you?

Sincerely,

Lord-Sorcerer Tekmet

Victory: Mine! I gloated heavily while she made me some tea (my prize).

Well? How did she do? Give my wife some advice for next time: tips, tricks, what-have-you. I've already told her what I would have done differently in her position, but the more advice the better. I only ask that you be nice to her because she's only played a few games. Ever. Her actually playing 40K with me bodes well for my future happiness, and I don't want her discouraged ;)

  1. Great battle report mate, and even better mini-story! I normally don't like the more narrative style of report, but that was perfect!

I think the main advice for your wife is target priority. Work out what your biggest threat is and then work on taking it out. Its tempting to launch everything at the closest target, but it don't always work out!

Either way, good luck to her!

  2. Gotta agree with soviet space on target priority. After becoming immobilise, the Rhion was irrelevent unless sitting on an objective. I think she played well for a first timer... invite your other half over to pathfinder to see how my other half's been handing me my butt for the last half year.

She's beaten me more times than I've beaten Devilin.

Just one thought, W40k is a game full of potential 'surprises' that benefit the experienced player. I'd recommend what I call 'open play' next time. That way you advise her objectively on which units form the biggest threats, special equipment (like saving throw denying firepower) and the benefits too. Effectively give her objective advise on what you'd do with her army.

Otherwise some victories (like killing the Assault squad) or other actions (like attacking the Rhino with the termies) isn't fair...

You don't have to play it like this, but it leads to VERY competitive games as you have to win on tactics and luck and can't count on your better knowledge to carry the day.

  3. I would personally have split the tac squad in two and used a combat squad and the scout squad as "bait" with the assault squad skulking behind.

If the enemy assaults, or is close enough to rapid-fire, then you're assault squad will probably be able to charge them next turn.

I can't say whether that would work well - I'm not that much of a gamer, but that general philosophy has served me well in the past.

Good luck with your next game!

  4. Mate,

If Mrs. Drax ever deigned to play me and I thrashed her this soundly I'd be for the high jump!

I've played a few introductory games with friends and I have to say that the advice I was given to not play for the win was vital: I lost at least one potential playmate through a solid victory.

Now I know better, and besides, these days I generally play for the 'cinematics' of it anyway.

Did you play an 'open hand' game? Because that's what I do quite a bit these days - helping; giving lots of advice; no surprises etc. - but I know full well that Mrs. Drax would not suffer my advice gladly. That said, she'd almost certainly not enjoy the game anyway!

I love the fact that Katie's captain was defiant to the last: what more advice could she want? - Go down fighting!

If it's any help, what I've done before is a brief list of what weapons/troops my inductee is equipped with and what their strengths/weaknesses are.

I've also done this (with a lot more time) in the form of briefings and orders.

  5. If I had to give your wife advice, I'd tell her to charge whenever given the chance! Especially in a marine v. marine scrap....always charge!

Marines don't stand still and fight...they charge! Use those power weapons!

Tough break on the assault squad. Next time you'll get him! :)

  6. My wife won the single introductory game I played with her (3rd ed., 500 pts; she had Blood Angels, I was learning Dark Eldar). She'll probably never play again, just so she can 'retire undefeated,' but she did say she had a greater appreciation for the hobby and why I liked it.

My advice would be more for you than for her - put yourself at a disadvantage and let her win an early game or two, then start raising your game until the two of you find yourselves actually competing on equal footing. It's a good opportunity to dust off those non-competitive units and Special Characters we all have but never play.

  7. Seems a bit of a long-winded way to decide who makes the tea, I always go for the fight to the death option :P looks like you had a great game, make sure you win next time that'll show him :P

  8. That was a great battle report.

Personally I would not have bothered with the Rhino at all unless it was contesting an objective and I would have held the scouts in reserve to use their outflanking ability to try and take / contests the Chaos objective later in the game.

  9. @Sovietspace: I'm glad you liked it. I generally try to format the narrative separate (color) so those who don't enjoy it can easily skip over.

@Drax/All: A little clarification on how the game was handled: We spent a good hour or so going over all of her choices, what they had, what they were good at... and then over my army.

Also, my wife generally doesn't like people "pulling the punches" in games. She's feisty and competitive, which is one of the many reasons I married her. ;) If I didn't play for the win, she'd know.

That said, I do think the "open-hand game" is a great idea. We may try that next time.

  10. Good look to your wife and I agree with TARGET PRIORITY! I hope to hear about her playing more, it would be nice to have a few more girl gamers ( would make more men happy)!!!!!!!!!

  11. Wow! Thanks for all of the support, guys!

First I should say that I think all of you are fantastic and admire your dedication to this AWESOME hobby! Before now, I haven't had the patience to learn all the rules, but after my very sound beating, I think I'd better do some research. The gauntlet has been thrown down!

I should also come to the defense of my husband and say that he offered me a friendly game and a long question-and-answer session before the game. I declined, being the smart, proud woman that I am. Haha.

I think my main task is - you guessed it - target priority! But first I need to identify what kind of target each is. TBH, I looked at the Rhino and went TANK!!! PANIC!!! instead of thinking "transport," which makes more sense.

Time for Katie to hit the books!

Q for Itkovian: I believe I only had 8 SM in my Tactical Squad, and I thought you could only split the squad when there were 10. Can you split it with a smaller number? I know there was no way you could have known that I only had 8, but I was just curious.

Thanks again, guys! And I'll keep lurking to see if there's anything else anyone wants to add.

  12. I'd like to post advice, but I'm dumbstruck that your wife even wanted to play. I guess I'd advise you to marry her, but it looks like you've already done that. Good on both of you for having fun.

  13. Gosh, Inner Geek, thank you! I'm not the most avid of gamers, but I try to give everything a try at least once!

  14. I would say, dont go after empty tanks!! there hardly any worry, well im just talking about rhinos but every other tank can be a big problem. I would also say to try and charge multiple squads so they stay in the fray for multiple turns.
And lastly i would like to give thanks for the advice you gave me, I will try and work on the lightbox and use the 2 second delay a lot more.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Katie, yes, with only 8 space marines in your squad, you can't combat squad them (split them into two.)

Splitting your squad into 2 parts is an immensely powerful skill, since it means you potentially have one unit that can hold two different objectives.

Also, you get a free heavy weapon if you have 10 in the squad, which is why I have a hard time taking a not full tactical squad.

    ReplyDelete
  16. What pcracken said ^ :D

Reducing the size of the tac squad to six and adding another assault marine to the squad might have been an alternative, though that does run the risk that your scoring units end up being too few and too fragile.

I would also have dropped the termies - droolsome, though they are - and gone with more tac/assault marines.

Good luck with your next game!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks for the input on the assault squad. I'm glad to know that some of the knowledge given to me has stuck! I think next time I will for sure get all 10, so I can split them.

And you are spot on about the termies. I so picked them just because of how cool they looked. Droolsome, in fact ;)

  18. Master darksol,
Excellent job and I got a good giggle out of the VS. the wifey picture!

    Katie
Does that mean you will be playing again? If so, my advice is come to the dark side and play chaos;) sorry had to play my part! Good first try!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey, Black Matt! Thanks for the vote of confidence. I do intend to play again, but I'll probably stay away from Chaos. They tend to give me the heebie-jeebies. Yes, in fact, I am way too squeamish to play them. Same with Tyranids.

My original army pick had been Eldar, but they are extremely complicated. Not sure if that's such a good "first" army. I'm attracted to the Orks because they have such awesome fluff, and also to the Tau, mostly because I know so little about them.

    ^^ Excitement!

  21. I like the pics on batreps and the play-by-play; too often I forget the camera.

For a first round...not bad at all. Terminators in that small a points are a bit hefty in terms of cost, and in terms of what it'll take to down them.

I think 5-man scouts with sniper rifles is probably ineffective at this points level. Truly, when I did more loyalists, I found scouts useful for 2 things:
    1) Holding an objective in my DZ
    2) Padding Sergeant Telion while he punks sarges and special weapons.

at least scouts can get a heavy weapon, and the heavy bolter with the 2+ to wound blast template compliments the sniper mission nicely. But, that's 750 for you; not a lot of slack.

As for going after the Rhino...once it's immobilized, it's not an issue unless you're playing for kill points. However...at this level? Especially at this level, it's an excellent moving wall. With smaller forces, it's much easier to block stuff off, so she did deprive you of some potential tricks.

SM tac squads...well, they're compulsory, and I'm pretty impressed you fit a full force org chart into the list. However, I'd keep it to either 5, or a full ten. At this level? 5 minimal, get other more useful things.

All in all, not a bad showing at all for the first time in a small game. At smaller levels, the dice can SERIOUSLY swing things, and forces are anything but complete/balanced.

  22. LOL this made me laugh so much tonight. Great battle report mate, it must have felt pretty good playing for pride and winning! Bad luck to the Mrs.Darksol though, I'm sure with enough practice she will manage to get her own back!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Awesome Battle Report! I did the EXACT SAME thing that your wife did against the Rhino in one of my first games. I think I knew that I shouldn't be focusing on it, but it was just annoying to still see it on the table :p

Good to see it was a fun game you both enjoyed!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Only assault rhinos when it means you will get more movement than running in the shooting phase OR if there are guys inside of it.
As well, assault squads are best under 2 conditions-
    1. They stay out of rapid fire range. This ensures they get the assault and don't get shot to pieces.
    2. They advance only in cover or if there are juicier targets out and about.
Take these two things to heart and an assault squad should be able to close a rend an opponent helpless.

  25. Really great battle report. My girlfriend will be collecting WHF Lizardmen in the future, so I look forward to pitting my Ogres against her :)

    Here's my tips, with titles!

Army list - Always try to make sure you have one or two weapons that are at least Str 7 or 8, preferrably a melta weapon somewhere. it's alot more comfortable taking out Transports at range, as they're more likely to have troops inside. If you roll a 6 and it explodes with troops loaded, much rejoycing can occur on your part :)

Rhino - Never charge an empty Rhino. Shoot at it with high str weapons, but if you're going to charge something, go for the biggest or closest Close Combat threat, with your toughest dudes.

Threats - It may be scary that those troops in front of you have 4 base attacks each, but you DO want to charge them. The last thing you want is for them to get the jump on you, and get an extra attack (and if its with Furuious charge, with +1 str and initiative).

All in all really well done!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Never charge an empty Rhino.I wouldn't go as far as to say this. Sometimes, if you have a squad with nothing to shoot at (or doesn't have any guns) it's more reliable to charge a vehicle to get some extra movement than rolling a D6 as a run move.

Obviously, that wasn't the case in this situation, but I wouldn't go as far as to say you should never do it. :)

  27. I am completely jealous that your wife wanted to play, like seriously. Really jealous. My girlfriend is playing a game with me when I get back from school (1 week, w00t!)

I hope she likes it as much as your wife kate did. marry her, oh wait, too late.... :P
