Harald Deathwolf

The majority of this conversion is simply using Canis Wolfborn as the base. The model is amazing and huge ... plus I have no inclination to actually use Canis in game ... so he's now Harald. >:)

Originally, I was just planning on equipping him with Bolt pistol + Frost Blade, Belt of Russ, Thunderwolf, Saga of the Bear.

This would maximize on his number of attacks and (between the Twolf and Frost Blade) give him S6. Belt of Russ gives him 3+/4+. I've heard a lot about giving him a Thunderhammer+StormShield as well. Sure, I'd be hitting at S9 and have a 3+/3+ save, but with one less attack and at Initiative 1. I still do see the merits of it, though ... so I decided the best answer was simply to magnetize it:

His right arm is magnetized at the wrist with a 1/16" disc magnet. Both the Frost Axe and the Thunderhammer come from the Terminator Wolf Guard box set. Thankfully, Terminator hands look indistinguishable from Power Armour hands.

The left arm is magnetized at the shoulder with a larger 1/8" disc magnet. The shoulderpad is fixed, so the arm just gets slipped underneath. I added the above Storm Bolter for the hell of it. Why not?

A short time ago I converted a Tervigon and a Tyrannofex. Both of which required a ton of greenstuff ... and I have mixed feelings about them (don't worry, I'll show them eventually). I appear to be much much better at using greenstuff to fill seams and fix small patches, like the seam in the metal wolf model's head.

What do you guys think?

  1. Excellent conversion - I'm looking at getting Harald Deathwolf in my own army and I think your conversion has inspired me to copy it haha!!!

  2. I like the choice of the name 'Harald'!

  3. Wish I could take credit for the idea of naming a Wolf Lord "Harry", but Harald Deathwolf is mentioned in the SW Codex fluff as one of the wolf lords. There's very little about him other than that he typically rides a Thunderwolf into battle.

  4. I like the conversion of the rider, but the squirrel (whoops, I mean "wolf") he's riding has always left me a bit flat. There's a company or two around doing some much more "wolf" looking models if you're interested:

  5. Thunderhammer Wolf Lords hit at S10, not 9. Check the SQ FAQ. 6 attacks on the charge, hitting on 3+ are more than enough to put a dent in a lot of things, insta-killing almost every IC out there.

Frost Blade is nice and I love the way it looks, but it seems a single claw is a bit more potent, thought he difference is minimal, stick with the badass axe. :)

All in all, a nice conversion and a good looking model!

  6. That conversion is brilliant, and I do like magnetising things (spent last night magnetising a predator). I will second the comment that the Canis model its based on does turn me off most things - just don't think it looks anything like a wolf.

Very good work on the green-stuff though, I'm sure once you get it painted it'll be completely undetectable which is the best sign of good green-stuff.

Hey, there. I like your Harald Deathwolf. I'm doing Deathwolf's company as well. Here, check out my banner so far - http://wolvesforthewolfgod.blogspot.com/2010/07/great-company-banner.html

  9. I had the same problems with Canis' wolf, right up until he arrived. I think the pictures on GW's site (as well as mine) are meant to show off the rider in the best light, but not necessarily the wolf. The tail's still weird, but I actually really like the wolf itself.

I think I've seen the mythicast ones, though right now it's coming up as 404. Microart I have a problem with in that there's only one body type. I want to do a Cavalry unit, and I'd rather not have every person on the same wolf...

That said, the best third-party wolves (IMO) I've seen are from Paulson Games.

  10. I was working under the impression that, like a bike, the Twolf bonuses were bonuses and not actual modifications to the base statistics ...

But you're right. The FAQ says they're modifications to the base, so the Thunderhammer would hit at S10. Glad I magnetized ;)

The axe is just way too badass to have skipped out on for a claw, IMO. I'm either fielding him with the axe or with the hammer ... depending on if I think I'll face more horde or more ic/tanks.

  11. I was worried about the wolf right up until I actually got it in my hands. I think the pictures on GW's site (as well as mine above) are meant to show off the rider in the best light, but not necessarily the wolf. The tail's still weird, but I actually really like the wolf itself. I'll make sure to show off the wolf to the best of my abilities when he's all painted.

  12. Definitely an improvement from the original model. I love me some lightning claws, but I always wondered about the range while riding that hugeass wolf- I always imagined him chopping downward with an axe or blasting away... with a bolt pistol... BY JOVE, you've read my mind!

Kudos to the conversion- seamless work and I'm waiting to see him painted!

  13. Definitely a kick-arse idea. I won't be using Canis in my army, but as a base for a Wolf Lord model he's excellent, especially with F/Blade and S/Shield.
