It burns

I got some heartbreaking news a few days ago.

You all remember that table I made some time ago? You know... this one:

It was sitting at my friend's house in Palos Verdes, CA ... when the Palos Verdes wildfire hit. My friend and his family were evacuated and are safe and unhurt (thank goodness), but the same cannot be said of the table. I'm told it succumbed to the murderous and destructive will of a violent (and fiery) warp storm. Alas, the maiden world resembles a foul and smoldering shell of what it once was (mostly styrofoam and wood).

I think I've come to terms with it's destruction, though my Eldar will never forgive... The important bit is that Joe and his family are ok.

In the meantime ... now I have to figure out what I'm going to use as a table. I was thinking something along the lines of this. In case you aren't fully able to appreciate the details of this masterpiece of a table, here is a gallery of pics from someone who bought one. But the price tag? ouch. ;) That's a lot of saving up I have to do, haha.

In the meantime, I need to build myself a makeshift version of it while I build up the cash to get it... I'm thinking a 6'x4' mdf board mounted on top of a cheap ikea table (as long as it's sturdy and wooden), top covered with felt, and then the sides covered by wall trim (to create a small inlay border to hold the board pieces in place)...

  1. Terrible news! It was such a beautiful board...

However, when you put it in perspective, things could have been much, much worse.

  2. Sad for your table and your friends property as well. Happy that everyone is safe.

Now, about the Sultan. I have a bunch of power tools in the garage (some of which I can even use). I think we can build one of these. Of course, you'll have to come to Texas to help. If it's any incentive, I'll buy the beer... the first week.

  3. Don't forget about the table tennis or ping pong table, they have folding ones that stay out of the way and can be had for little money if used or warped.

also the 5x9 foot size gives you a unused border for dice drinks books and figures off the game surface.

Here's a link to the one I bought.

I also play a lot of table tennis and the wife likes it too.

  4. Aww, that just sucks, it was a beautiful table mate. Like the rest I am just glad everybody is okay.

As for the Sultan table, I'm inclined to think that you may be able to make something comparable for much less cash. Equally though I want you to buy it, just so you cant report is it is as good as it looks!

  5. On a serious note, I'm glad your friends made it out okay, that's scary stuff.

Now, on a gaming note, AAAARRRRGH! You can rebuild it, you have the technology, but I know deep down a sweet table like the one you had will be sorely missed...

  6. Sorry to hear about your table. I'm happy that your friends are OK.

As for the Sultan, no doubt it's an amazing piece, but at that price (even if I could afford it and had the room for it) I'd be afraid to use it. I just saw their new Emissary table and that is more along my lines and budget. It too is incredibly beautiful, but I'm currently having a custom furniture piece made for me.

  7. Thanks for sharing in my pain, guys. I had a lot of good memories on that table.

@Geek: I lost a lot of sleep last night trying to devise a way to head to Texas for a few weeks to take you up on that, hahaha. I'm honestly not sure I can take that much time off of work, plus transporting it back would be an issue. Meh, I'll find a way to get a table for now... though coming over for a day or so to hang out/game sounds like something I can do.

@scdarkangel: The ping pong table is probably the best option I've got outside of making a table myself custom to my needs. My only hesitation is on how large it is. I have room in the house for a 6'x4' table, but 9'x5'? ...I might have room for that, I'm gonna have to whip out the measuring tape to double-check.

@Sovietspace: Aye, the pricetag is its only drawback. I've been pondering over this table for a while. It is gorgeous, and wouldn't look amiss in the middle of the house. It would be a great piece of furniture ... and yet I'm having a hard time reconciling the cost. As it is, I found a carpenter who thinks he can make one for ~$3k. I think I might go that direction...

@Mik: right there with you on both counts. :)

@Oni: I saw the Emissary first, actually ... but then I saw the Sultan. I don't know if I can be happy with the Emissary knowing it's there, lol. Can I un-see the Sultan, pls? haha.

  8. Dear God!

It's a man's life out there in the far colonies.

But seriously, the safety of your friends is the important thing. Shame about the table but...

  9. That is very harsh. I'd break out a big "NO!" if such a thing happened to me.

Naturally, I'm too lazy to create such a potential occurence.

  10. I'm doing the same thing this winter. I was actually inspired by the Geek Chic line as well ... I'm going to be tearing apart an old rolltop desk that hasn't been used in years and isn't really worth the refinish as its mostly vainer with no solids. But the drawers are cool for a GM station on one end and the I'm planning on putting one side of the desk on each side end of the table for some drawer space. I like the multi-purpose concept of the Geek Chic tables and I want to do a 6 to 8 inch inset 4x6 mini game surface with a simple leaf system (probably just two 4x4 pieces) so I can have an ongoing game under the table top.

  11. @ The Lord of Excess: Holy crap, Sir. If you are indeed intending on building something like that yourself PLEASE send me pics and keep me updated. I'll feature it on the blog (assuming you wouldn't mind, of course). I'd sure love to follow that project's progress. :)
