A Word on Artwork

After this last comic, I recieved a request for more quality in the comics.
Happy to get any kind of response from anyone reading the blog, my reply was that I'd work on getting out a higher-quality color version.

Well, after spending a lot of time on it, and getting a feel for how much time it would take to churn out a comic at that standard, I'm no longer so sanguine about it.

Given enough time, I could pump out some professional grade artwork. I've done it before on some other projects (mostly Dungeons&Dragons related, don't judge!!! ;P ) , but I couldn't get over the feeling that all this time spent on one comic should have been spent finishing the paint-job on the Guardians, and magnetizing my Chaos Terminator Lord (oh, you'll see), etc. While I can make comics at that level, I think at that point the comics would dominate the blog. Because I'm rather eclectic and whimsical with what kind of things I do, I'd rather stick to the comics how they are. This would allow me to give you more comics as well as posts/articles on other 40-hobby things within the same time-span, rather than becoming a blog that posts only comics, and only once every other week or so...

The comics I've done so far are 5-10 minute sketches, max. They're thrown into Photoshop, resized and given word-bubbles. The process is rather short. There's a lot more required in making a color version. I will continue to play with it to see if repeated practice makes it more feasable ... but at the moment, the only increase in quality that I'm prepared to do is to spend more time in the drawing stage to get you cleaner lines and such. First Round Lascannon got rather messy in those last two panels.

The comics weren't really meant to become anything more grandiose than a simple and quick laugh; a humorous view into the quirky world of 40K.

Also, the suggestion was made that I get the comic up on Golden Throne. If they want it there, that's totally cool with me. If any of you would like the comics on your own site, that is also totally cool with me. My url is down at the bottom of the image, and as long as that's still intact, you are all completely free to use them as you like. I made them for you anyways.

Ok, hopefully most of you are still reading, because I got a special treat for you :) Check this guy out. His artwork and attention to detail are phenomenal. Browse through his site; there is some seriously amazing work there. I've added him to the Community Feed on the right. His blog is called Rajabersiong.

  1. The sketches are great Darksol. I think that's the beauty of them being like short bursts of humour. I guess you could eeeeeventually try colouring them, but still the joke is clear in the sketches alone!

wish I could draw like that mate.

  2. I say stick to what you're doing and if someone wants to add color they can print them out and break open the big box of crayolas!

And that guy you linked to... very nice stuff on that page.

  3. I've got two things...

    1. Can you put a link to the most recent comic in your sidebar? I've found that if I label my posts with one specific label, then I can link to all the posts with that one label.

This way a reader can find all the previous comics in a breeze.

    2. Are these a regular thing here now or are they as the inspiration hits you? I know the demands of comic writing can be tremendous.

And... I like the sketch quality, maybe just tightening up your linework a litle and leave them black and white... if the idea works, it doesn't matter if it's color or not.

  4. All the comic posts are tagged as "All Things 40K Comic" they are the only posts with that label. It's listed with the rest of the labels in the left column ... but perhaps I should give them a less conspicuous link...

I'd call them "pseudo-regular". I'm not sure a strict schedule would work, as the pressures of meeting a deadline could result in a comic I'm not happy with. I think I'm going to attempt to post them frequently (mixing them in with the regular posts) but other than that, I'll go with when inspiration strikes.

I don't want to close the lid on the coloring issue completely ... I just don't think it's where I want to go right now, and only because the amount of time it would currently take would make it the FOCUS of the blog: All Things 40K, which by title is intended to be a broad view.

As things progress, I probably will integrate a couple color versions as I hone the process I use to create them.

    Thanks for the support.

  5. ... I meant to give them a "more conspicuous link."

Not to be read as sarcastic.

  6. Not taken so...

That's how I found them originally. I understand the demands and hope that you can find a way to make them a little more "regular" and still keep the balance with the rest of the content on your blog.

  7. I know how amazing your artwork can get, but what makes any comic you do is the combination of the art and the writing. Maybe I'm biased being a writer with NO art ability at all, but I like you being able to put out a quick story and keep your head in the process. What with everything else you do that is.

    Keep the good stuff coming.
