Despite having jumped the gun a bit and assembled the wings... I can't put them on the Gundam without the harness, so that took priority.<br />

The Gundam has 4 wings total. Two larger wings with the feather expansions, and two smaller, lower wings.<br />

I spent the majority of a night just assembling one of the wings, and applying the third party feather upgrade. The pictures below show the wing in "extended mode." Basically, the upper left and upper right portions can fold in towards the center to make the wing more compact. </div>

Applying the upgrade took a lot of time, as this actually required glue (unlike the rest of the model). Also, despite the instructions, I had to take care of the placement so that the new feathers would not interfere with the wing's ability to fold and unfold.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157181917211253174.post-91569018017635431042013-11-12T10:00:00.000-08:002013-11-12T10:00:05.670-08:00Building the Gundam - 06<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So what's left, you might ask? <br />
The weapons, stand, and wings. I'll do the wings first, as they involve an upgrade set (more feathers, yay!) that we ebay'd from China.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157181917211253174.post-64582790382806680252013-11-06T13:42:00.003-08:002013-11-06T13:42:49.570-08:00Playsets<div class="separator tr_bq" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I love me some tabletop roleplaying games, but my biggest problem is that my regular gaming buddies are busy, and spread out geographically. It's often been a chore to find the right set of tools to re-create that tabletop feel remotely. Enter <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/985647565/playsets-the-future-of-social-storytelling" target="_blank">Playsets</a>.<br />

<br />
Playsets is an awesome solution to that problem, and looks like it would add an element of fun to a remote game. It's up on Kickstarter now, but it's as of this post only halfway to its goal with 9 days to go. I really hope this project gets funded. I'll leave you with their pitch:<br />
<br />
<blockquote>
We love tabletop role playing games. The trouble is, we moved away from our fellow adventurers. We all found employment and built families. Game nights were few and far between; we searched for a way to save them and to stay connected. Nothing we found solved our problem.<br />
We decided to create an app to help us share more adventures with old friends; to feel like they were in the room with us, even if they were thousands of miles away.<br />
We wanted something simple that could be used with any gaming system and wasn't confined by specific mechanics. The interface should be invisible, the maps should be beautiful, the whole experience should be easy.<br />
So we made playsets. We hope you love it as much as we do and, with your help, we can make it a reality.</blockquote>

It's been a busy weekend for me, though it may not look like I got a lot of any one thing done. Despite that, I'm exhausted. Physically and emotionally exhausted.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I'm helping a friend of mine produce a web-series that I'll link you all to when it debuts, but for now suffice to say it's a series of comedy-sketch vignettes. This weekend was the first shoot day for episode 1. I got a photo of the cast:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU-WaI8plU9hO8Of_Ksdxgmxqq5tKWOWBzejqGs7MXwsIel7TEQAPRUSP96nXCJYzEQCZ3OY21rKs8y8OwPEBOUGP51yaGbohaUnO6ozNU77uOrarV1ZxYnX_yFREMIwDufD_Myx2QjBc/s1600/541443_10151761879978174_253655704_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU-WaI8plU9hO8Of_Ksdxgmxqq5tKWOWBzejqGs7MXwsIel7TEQAPRUSP96nXCJYzEQCZ3OY21rKs8y8OwPEBOUGP51yaGbohaUnO6ozNU77uOrarV1ZxYnX_yFREMIwDufD_Myx2QjBc/s320/541443_10151761879978174_253655704_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
We met at a martial arts studio and mostly filmed in the parking lot. The studio was nice enough to let us use their facilities for the day as a base station while we shot. The emotionally draining part was sitting around for a couple hours worried that the police would roll up on us. See, the cast members above in black were actually holding plastic toy guns during their scene... in the parking lot. The last time I was part of a low budget film involving toy guns in a parking lot, I ended up face to face with a cop holding me at gunpoint... and me with a toy AK-47. Scary shit, and thankfully no one got hurt at the time. Even more thankfully, this shoot went without a hitch. We were very careful about when and where those toys were, and got that shot done as quick as possible so they could go back in their bags. Nevertheless, nerve-wracking up until we got through it. Once the gun scene was done I was able to <a href="https://vine.co/v/hjdzIKvJJ1F" target="_blank">blow off a little steam using a knotted rope in the studio</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzdEt8KCyePH5xP477pNuRclRpILbZB_DD6WiXsjl1jfnGsNwnHgnSPG70WQA4Zupt7ltFauY46IfZCqRO7iyDVwKtCTHar_2frCuZKi5Xjv-3aSZo6tiyHOw7SMzbmaRIv3IwfeiHL9o/s1600/IMAG0166.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzdEt8KCyePH5xP477pNuRclRpILbZB_DD6WiXsjl1jfnGsNwnHgnSPG70WQA4Zupt7ltFauY46IfZCqRO7iyDVwKtCTHar_2frCuZKi5Xjv-3aSZo6tiyHOw7SMzbmaRIv3IwfeiHL9o/s320/IMAG0166.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Not a lot done on the Gundam, only got partway through the left leg. Above, you see all the parts that are visible in the leg, ready to be hit with primer. Crazy how many there are.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaLqjY57zsC4kuKKtwGAKrYImOV4poosWWKCIUQgMCC-Vcho8IKnuprxUufAzecqJyDa-cyM1w5r1tK1QY6xDW84tdgkTXsHWOB-ytaXupUgrAJPeN4ftpdb39NIUeZaMnRVmlD5Vj6Gg/s1600/IMAG0169.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaLqjY57zsC4kuKKtwGAKrYImOV4poosWWKCIUQgMCC-Vcho8IKnuprxUufAzecqJyDa-cyM1w5r1tK1QY6xDW84tdgkTXsHWOB-ytaXupUgrAJPeN4ftpdb39NIUeZaMnRVmlD5Vj6Gg/s320/IMAG0169.jpg" width="181" /></a></div>
And about here is where I got with it all. Some blues on the foot done, before I just couldn't muster the energy anymore. I needed something mindless to absorb myself in for the rest of Sunday night. Painting required too much concentration and I was burnt out.<br />

I've had this leg assembled for a couple days now, just waiting to be painted up, but was only able to get to it yesterday, due to crazy schedules and projects.<br />

There are a lot of intricate pieces in here, so I had to be very careful which parts were hit with spray primer so that the moving bits were not. Even despite no paint, some of the joints were tight, so I added a little petroleum jelly to keep the motion smooth.<br />

I was painting this while my roommates were watching Poltergeist. Due to distraction, I had forgotten to take a "finished" pic before assembling it onto the rest of the robot. Blame the movie.<br />

Second arm all assembled and ready to paint!<br />
I'm continually amazed at how articulate the resulting build is, especially considering that this whole process has been glue-free; just precisely shaped pieces that snap together to hold others in place, create hinge joints, ball-socket joints, or what-have-you. Crazy.<br />

Papers, Please is a game that I've been addicted to for some time. Despite several story play-throughs I still find myself coming back, if even just to play in endless mode. I don't know, there's something innately relaxing about mindless tasks.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
In the fictional country of Arstotzka, you have been assigned the glorious job of being a Border Checkpoint Inspector. The premise is simple: check each entrant's papers for adherence to Arstotzka's rules. Those that pass muster get allowed in. Those that do not are turned away. Of course, things don't remain so simple.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGRZ1ZcRf1PNNf4l3vQJlHrbSn9IqnO-gqpustJwO4zGPk_-rxzAzBxqvmRB2CwPXZDUlN8IDO3H_mXfJKjheB6AAew0I1iBb60RAB0JuaZWCoSi9GG7DWVTAa8YkRR99STENdDLGcs0s/s1600/PapersPlease+2013-10-18+20-39-07-71.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGRZ1ZcRf1PNNf4l3vQJlHrbSn9IqnO-gqpustJwO4zGPk_-rxzAzBxqvmRB2CwPXZDUlN8IDO3H_mXfJKjheB6AAew0I1iBb60RAB0JuaZWCoSi9GG7DWVTAa8YkRR99STENdDLGcs0s/s320/PapersPlease+2013-10-18+20-39-07-71.png" width="320" /></a></div>
This is what the game interface looks like most of the time. You can see what's going on outside your station in the above section of the screen, and you have a couple resources at your station to evaluate entrants to Arstotzka. Note in the above example that there are quite a few rules in the book to keep in mind. The game starts with only a few, and slowly piles on new rules with each day.<br />
<br />

Things can get pretty complicated, requiring different methods of verifying data, like comparing fingerprints.<br />

<br />
Any error on your part results in an annoying little pink slip printing out and dropping on your desk. In story mode, it's even worse. You have a limited amount of time each day to process as many people as you can. You are paid for every correct processing (whether they were denied or allowed entry), but are not paid if you make a mistake. Several mistakes can result in docking pay. At the end of each day, you have to pay rent, buy food, and pay utilities for your family. No utilities or food could mean family members getting sick, requiring expensive medicine. Some might die. <br />
<br />
Interestingly enough, the story mode starts bringing in moral choices. Some of the people you run into can be very convincing in why they need to get through. Some political, some personal. One lady needed heart surgery only available in Arstotzka, and begs to be let in. ...but any action on your part against the rules will actively hurt your family. Do you focus on your family above all others? Do political tensions convince you to attempt to leave the country? Do your ideals take priority over your son's medicine?<br />
<br />
It's an interesting experiment, and the game has many endings, and thus, a lot of replay value.<br />

All in all, I like the game. A lot. Some of my friends have laughed at the game as being too much like work... but I don't know. The storyline can get rather tense, and keeps me interested. Then there's Endless Mode, which is kind of relaxing, oddly. Kind of like a puzzle game. <br />
<br />
If this even marginally piques your interest, give it a shot. It's $10 on Steam.<br />

Not a whole lot new since the last update, so I'll keep it short.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5lPyHeE9LvKCrsEQRr1gLUEBrO_s6NDdqr1P9EhBXc2myyKWvy64qdjhyBA5XT7eE38053rHaHfLwXf2y5XLcDuT2PfRI7ia7G-3tRqTIi5uGEN1IhQ96ZlJ3F1jD0ZD4KEyyeguhxcg/s1600/IMAG0143.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5lPyHeE9LvKCrsEQRr1gLUEBrO_s6NDdqr1P9EhBXc2myyKWvy64qdjhyBA5XT7eE38053rHaHfLwXf2y5XLcDuT2PfRI7ia7G-3tRqTIi5uGEN1IhQ96ZlJ3F1jD0ZD4KEyyeguhxcg/s320/IMAG0143.jpg" width="181" /></a></div>
<br />
Finished painting the left shoulder unit. Above is after paint, before weathering powder. Needs more dirt. When I took the photo, I didn't realize the Gundam was sitting in frame in the background, quietly supervising my progress, haha. Just sitting there. Judging.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeoxCSjXO1eiBKOh6oEli3tAuL2QbHYQupkhnKdtyM6n8sUq7u5JCADzAxgzYiHvPSMOCkq9LSBRsZ3exa58_Iy60fPjyJt5V7x44G65sWw95TMzrRNRXDE_d7ERLfayJXRp7u-hb0AXw/s1600/IMAG0144.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeoxCSjXO1eiBKOh6oEli3tAuL2QbHYQupkhnKdtyM6n8sUq7u5JCADzAxgzYiHvPSMOCkq9LSBRsZ3exa58_Iy60fPjyJt5V7x44G65sWw95TMzrRNRXDE_d7ERLfayJXRp7u-hb0AXw/s320/IMAG0144.jpg" width="181" /></a></div>
<br />
And now it's dirty. Let's see if the Gundam approves.<br />
<br />

And so the Gundam build continues. The head took me probably the longest to build so far. There were lots of very tiny components, and hitting each little bit with spray primer was pretty rough, but I like the end result. <br />

Something I had just noticed after slapping the head on. The weird ear fins are so wide, they actually impede the shoulder gun case-lids from opening all the way. You can kinda finagle them open, but the Gundam has to tilt his head all the way back to do so... kinda like he's laughing at the sky when firing them... haha, now I like it like that, lol.<br />
<br />

Though not as many small pieces as the head, the arm has a lot of moving parts. Had to assemble/disassemble a few times in order to make sure which parts were visible when assembled. I didn't want to lock up any moving part with paint. The above photo was mid-way through painting the digital camo pattern onto the arm-gauntlet.<br />

I found a cool image on Google of the model we're building, and immediately took it into Photoshop to start sending my friend some ideas around color-scheming. At this point, I knew he didn't like the mostly white canon color-scheme, and derided the "red booties" that were the feet. He had mentioned that he did like blue, so I thought I'd start him off with a blue scheme...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>This was done by fully desaturating the original image, then sectioning off areas into different layers, then finally adjusting hue/saturation/brightness of individual layers.<br />

I also sent him a red-gold scheme with black wings as a further example of what's possible. I hoped something in either of these two would spark some ideas.<br />
<br />
He came back to me with the below image of a photoshopped military ship:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSj9nM0UkL-12bIvsBNWZIM_zpOQmdEadpZptue0UbtDzWsH4HAtaDIHKjg762ZCgMb3Vxr3suF0fDYahdngt9CPv81Hc6DQ2vjLgRN_2dazPXJbKV75mESaPq3yo2myPoRmkrPY_IzvA/s1600/DDG-81-Digital-Thunder-55-75-310-sm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSj9nM0UkL-12bIvsBNWZIM_zpOQmdEadpZptue0UbtDzWsH4HAtaDIHKjg762ZCgMb3Vxr3suF0fDYahdngt9CPv81Hc6DQ2vjLgRN_2dazPXJbKV75mESaPq3yo2myPoRmkrPY_IzvA/s320/DDG-81-Digital-Thunder-55-75-310-sm.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The point was the digital camouflage used, specifically. He wanted something like that, only used selectively instead of over the entire model. And for the wings, He asked if it would be possible to do them similar to a bird's, where the undersides tended to be lighter than the outsides, and the ends of long feathers were darker.<br />
<br />
And so after some more Photoshoppery, I sent him this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6cFUQqVAzEMU6-33aaC9m44GBCvA_BMzjAnKhXTJJKfhYhDv6xhSTPx4iC9J8UMv8uEQWa5L-15KaI40bQU_b0wmeUCaOCZuGwDiOYV7BJICZ1PmP1PzRJN_jqIZ-KJLHxD7ZOXPGajE/s1600/camo+gundam.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6cFUQqVAzEMU6-33aaC9m44GBCvA_BMzjAnKhXTJJKfhYhDv6xhSTPx4iC9J8UMv8uEQWa5L-15KaI40bQU_b0wmeUCaOCZuGwDiOYV7BJICZ1PmP1PzRJN_jqIZ-KJLHxD7ZOXPGajE/s320/camo+gundam.png" width="320" /></a></div>
The color placement wouldn't be exactly like that, I told him. I had just sectioned it off already in Photoshop and this was meant to convey the idea and get sign-off. I'd be sending him pics along the way, and if things weren't going right, I'd just paint over the offending portions.<br />
<br />
Needless to say, he liked it. So I immediately set about putting the thing together...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMamglkuNLpWhwA5MmXePUKyrf5OSsMKbqxdWM7ZwKMRQAq1R_3GCzBDOeNrh8Csp9lq6DDFQ-Zc8lonw7MwRzNzuYMdV3xBMMlwhmH_E55-rnmHHRq2IduUvTyQVthELmBsn0FYJZuBc/s1600/IMAG0119.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMamglkuNLpWhwA5MmXePUKyrf5OSsMKbqxdWM7ZwKMRQAq1R_3GCzBDOeNrh8Csp9lq6DDFQ-Zc8lonw7MwRzNzuYMdV3xBMMlwhmH_E55-rnmHHRq2IduUvTyQVthELmBsn0FYJZuBc/s320/IMAG0119.jpg" width="181" /></a></div>

Yes I painted him. And here's the proof. When my friend gets this in the mail, he'll be able to show it off to his friends and say "somewhere inside this thing is a cockpit with a little tiny pilot, and he's painted too!" and bask in their awe.<br />
<br />

The model's default has you put a shiny metallic green sticker underneath a clear plastic dome for the large gem-like lens in the Gundam's chest. I decided to paint mine. The gem was large enough that my usual trick for gems wasn't enough, needed to do some wet-blending. I brushed on some varnish afterwards to give it a shine beyond the painted light-spots.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm using the lighter color from the digital camo to do the abdomen/undercarriage area. Weathering this thing makes me giddy; it's fun as shit. Paint chips and Forgeworld weathering powders make me happy inside.<br />

The section that caps the top of the chest gem was one of the areas I had picked out for the digital camo. I think it came out rather well.<br />

It's that big ol' Gundam Zero Wing box that my friend ordered. I was more than a little surprised at how large the box is, but I'm so excited for this.<br />

The wings are articulate enough to fold in front of it. Craziness.<br />
We haven't yet decided on a color scheme. I only know that he's not thrilled with the canon colors, so we're exploring some options.<br />
<br />
OK, enough stalling, let's break this box open.<br />

True story: I sent the above photo to my friend, and he called me up... and laughed for like 5 minutes straight. I guess this is what I get when I just nonchalantly answer "sure" to his asking if I'd build and paint a Gundam model for him, LOL.<br />

A good friend of mine is interested in collecting some Gundam models... but he doesn't like the idea of them just being in their pre-colored plastics. So, I'm going to help out by painting them. This is the first model up:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAozKxvmS-uQUpgrF1DXQqzlIt9MqVOA3m5sEGxXA2RkmK3I4tsA1kX-gEzCGzwEIluwV48LEr3SpJEinVuoVJ3SHMXfeBKYtIt892GzDINqhF9sa-BbhLUs1GSRtzkA43C3HLvap_f7k/s1600/513DK1FF53L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAozKxvmS-uQUpgrF1DXQqzlIt9MqVOA3m5sEGxXA2RkmK3I4tsA1kX-gEzCGzwEIluwV48LEr3SpJEinVuoVJ3SHMXfeBKYtIt892GzDINqhF9sa-BbhLUs1GSRtzkA43C3HLvap_f7k/s320/513DK1FF53L.jpg" width="277" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It's the Wing Gundam Zero, Master Grade, 1:100 scale.<br />
Bandai makes a veritable ton of these very articulate and poseable models in a variety of grades and scales... something that we both had to educate ourselves on in order to make a better selection. Master Grade applies specifically to the 1:100 scale, and is a measure of complexity, model articulation, and poseability of the model. It's in the mail, and I can't wait to get my mitts on it.<br />
<br />
There will be a little bit of conversion work to be done, involving an upgrade kit that supplies more feathers. The end result will look like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis3X0pvGjbfDrrCiDykgOnXa53ttuzScuy_taU7Av52Mg3H7NInyfPU1C9nHiAHxH-BBB6FthHYi5hbU88XI2riqOB9AcJVplEdnKuB1vF8FtQ5y5ONJvkKY1A6ILw_9t7bJ-DxtGZteQ/s1600/$T2eC16dHJHQE9nzEzslCBQL3FsV81g~~60_3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis3X0pvGjbfDrrCiDykgOnXa53ttuzScuy_taU7Av52Mg3H7NInyfPU1C9nHiAHxH-BBB6FthHYi5hbU88XI2riqOB9AcJVplEdnKuB1vF8FtQ5y5ONJvkKY1A6ILw_9t7bJ-DxtGZteQ/s320/$T2eC16dHJHQE9nzEzslCBQL3FsV81g~~60_3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

We still have yet to discuss color scheme. The only solid decision made on that front is that he does not like the default mostly-white scheme, and we've been in discussion about some possibilities. I'll see about making some mock-ups to send his way to help finalize the scheme.<br />
<br />
One of the intriguing bits about this is that (outside of the extra feathers upgrade kit) it involves no glue. All the pieces are snap-on, several involving ball-socket joints. <br />
<br />
I'll post pictures occasionally to keep you all updated on progress. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157181917211253174.post-48065338242238553322013-09-25T10:00:00.000-07:002013-09-25T10:00:06.476-07:00Back from Vacation<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's been a week of amazingness in the Yucatan Peninsula with some friends for me. Thought I'd share some photos :)<br />
<br />
A large group of us went for a friend's wedding, though we took advantage of the locale and went on a Mayan excursion one of the days.<br />
<br />
The one up top is of me grimacing towards the jungle below from the top of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coba" target="_blank">Coba Pyramid</a>. The picture makes me laugh because it looks like I'm running my own survival reality-TV show... but all I did was climb up there, hahaha. Not to say it wasn't hard, mind. It was hot and very humid. Just walking around on flat ground was enough to make sweat ooze from every pore... and Coba's steps are steep, but that pic kinda looks like I'd been without civilization for days instead of just hours, hahaha.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

That's the Coba pyramid from the ground. They've kindly hung a rope for the trip down. Climbing down is even more intimidating than going up, surprisingly. The steep stone steps could easily break bone or kill if you slipped and went down the hard way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimRa4E5weXrUOn3S8-h4aTQJ3LF2zoRvuDzbJuUWMhxAcedrlF_X0YnwS0bmXrMAfoVEJ1bkorpnhkQgu5J1NdfC3m0XFiQZ1nrWRnC-zmbHttjhz8NFwpduF8SoaYj_9EBHLXjIkwCNc/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimRa4E5weXrUOn3S8-h4aTQJ3LF2zoRvuDzbJuUWMhxAcedrlF_X0YnwS0bmXrMAfoVEJ1bkorpnhkQgu5J1NdfC3m0XFiQZ1nrWRnC-zmbHttjhz8NFwpduF8SoaYj_9EBHLXjIkwCNc/s320/3.jpg" width="181" /></a></div>
Of course, what's the point in climbing an ancient Mayan ziggurat without a little human sacrifice? That's the groom on the block there ;)<br />
<br />

They have 2 ball courts at Coba. The guide said that the sloped sides made this a practice court, as the real-deal ball courts had straight walls. Apparently you have to get a leather ball through the hoop without using your arms... like in the movie El Dorado, except that the game was over when the first point was scored, and that often took more than a day. The guide was unsure whether the winners or losers were sacrificed, though he said there was more evidence supporting the winners getting that "honor."<br />
<br />
The whole trip wasn't jungle and ruins, though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A lot of my time was spent in this Mexican restaurant. I'm not really into tequila or margaritas, but on day one the waiter here asked if I'd like a margarita. I figured that this was my best chance to see if I really didn't like them, or if I just hadn't had them made right. I took him up on his offer, and told him that I normally don't like margaritas, but am figuring that this is probably the best chance anyone would have of changing my mind. He seemed to take it as a kind of challenge.<br />
<br />
And boy did he deliver. I ended up ordering 8 more that night alone. From then on it was tequila dreams and margarita sunshine.<br />

Given the location, thought we'd make a week of it. Hello beach, food, and drink! See you all in a week or so.<br />
<br />
I may still post snippets of things over the week, but don't expect anything heavy, as I don't think the TSA looks kindly on packing dozens of paint-pots. ;)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157181917211253174.post-46797715269805625822013-09-13T15:37:00.001-07:002013-09-13T15:37:48.217-07:00Hyper Light Drifter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Came across another awesome looking kickstarter-driven video game: <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1661802484/hyper-light-drifter" target="_blank">Hyper Light Drifter</a></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Hyper Light Drifter is a 2D Action RPG in the vein of the best 8-bit and 16-bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Visions for this game have been fluttering in my skull for ages; something dark and fantastic, with giant forests to navigate, huge floating structures to explore, deep crumbling ruins to loot, massive throngs of enemies to rend, and behemoths both flesh and mechanical to overcome. I want it all to be as beautiful as possible, forging color with the dark and eerie wastes and intimidating landscapes. It plays like the best parts of A Link to the Past and Diablo, evolved: lightning fast combat, more mobility, an array of tactical options, more numerous and intelligent enemies, and a larger world with a twisted past to do it all in."</blockquote>

I also played a little bit with object-source lighting techniques, something I've been wanting to get more into for a while now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the most part, I painted him to follow the KemVar concept art up on the MERCS site. The minis on their site deviate a bit in their paint schemes, but I liked the concept art. The only real thing I changed was to make the green armor a camo-pattern. I did this because this team's speciality is an active-camouflage system, which helps out their evasion during battle. I thought it appropriate to paint their armor in camo-pattern to better tie into this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Finding that camo pattern took me a while, though. I took a picture of three of the color schemes I tested out (leftover GW slotta bases make excellent proof of concept color testers). Each pattern had a combination of three base colors, a wash, then a glaze. I ended up going with the middle sample, as its effect was closest overall to the squad's canon green.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157181917211253174.post-57214640349931679242013-09-09T09:30:00.000-07:002013-09-09T09:30:02.881-07:00Step-By-Step Black Legion Daemon Prince<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So this buddy has been sitting in my cabinets for a while. I built him up before the new CSM codex, and afterwards, came to the conclusion that there was no place for him in the army :(</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So into the cabinet he went, unpainted, while I focused on collecting and assembling what would make a good army. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now that I'm not focusing on armies as much, I looked into my model cabinet and saw all these great models with a renewed motivation. I didn't care if they were viable in-game or not, I liked the models and dammit, I was going to paint them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, let's do a step-by-step on this model...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 1: Black basecoat</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6L-JfwbIqeEk44NWJ5wytzF4FYtakH7a39uWvXHdqR8jHyz0oQ_PeQNLyPmGhVwu-rCVV_KEWToFFh2Zqvnst2hNSeISixKc-uI-309CwOHK9MT5DgN3It1vb09XrZgKEQFwOp5f2ZVM/s1600/IMG_2351.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6L-JfwbIqeEk44NWJ5wytzF4FYtakH7a39uWvXHdqR8jHyz0oQ_PeQNLyPmGhVwu-rCVV_KEWToFFh2Zqvnst2hNSeISixKc-uI-309CwOHK9MT5DgN3It1vb09XrZgKEQFwOp5f2ZVM/s320/IMG_2351.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I did order a can of grey spray primer, so I'll start playing with that soon, but it didn't come in time for this guy. First up, I'm going to work on the black armour itself. This is the same technique in the <a href="http://masterdarksol.blogspot.com/2012/10/5-step-black.html" target="_blank">5-Step Black</a>. The only real conversion here is swapping out the backpack for a set of WHFB dragon wings. There's also a good amount of greenstuff just to close up some of the seams.<br />
<br />
Step 2: Eshin Grey<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo7TLxu8cw1hBiFY00cIEtfOvOON1gSvMcz19aS6xgJkrcIovZNB2HtqmPUMs3Z4IDW399GD8D4_j4qacFoN2u8sZPCNgDWDfXAB5Hyp1Yx0A4Sd9acKIp_8IICBUb_JYlkcrAkV9rM-E/s1600/IMG_2352.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo7TLxu8cw1hBiFY00cIEtfOvOON1gSvMcz19aS6xgJkrcIovZNB2HtqmPUMs3Z4IDW399GD8D4_j4qacFoN2u8sZPCNgDWDfXAB5Hyp1Yx0A4Sd9acKIp_8IICBUb_JYlkcrAkV9rM-E/s320/IMG_2352.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I covered most of what is to be the black armour in Eshin Grey. The idea here is to make the base color a dark grey, so that there's room to add depth (via Nuln Oil). If I were to keep the base color actually black, it would lack depth.<br />
<br />
Step 3: Dawnstone<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl9EC10FlhYcpowE4zWvgVbyvOQcea3QUzT8gbj-4vz5SHCMlNLHlVrQ-bZEifC7OqLyLYsGFyfyRpI4wY5BZXabxI6QsvpvrHMHeS6kJ9p37vkEMiBEWkiLJ_zhqcGISvvuB2rUNbONw/s1600/IMG_2353.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl9EC10FlhYcpowE4zWvgVbyvOQcea3QUzT8gbj-4vz5SHCMlNLHlVrQ-bZEifC7OqLyLYsGFyfyRpI4wY5BZXabxI6QsvpvrHMHeS6kJ9p37vkEMiBEWkiLJ_zhqcGISvvuB2rUNbONw/s320/IMG_2353.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is a middle-highlight, keep it to raised areas that would be brighter, given your lightsource. I'm not doing any object-source-lighting here, just a standard overhead light-source. In areas where there is a lot of room (shoulderpads) I've used this to leave streaks instead of a solid coat, in order to suggest more texture than is there.<br />
<br />
Step 4: Longbeard Grey<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPQFfpbZ6M9GzpA_yDGNTp_yy166jhPy2G2v0H7F6g-jTnG9J2Iud6FruyymuHD53SUzVq0nliAXIt_gi3IG2z6UXQ1mnGE6Id2hoBPyELhOtuRCEuP_ka-3FVe1Fm3JMNLU7NGUeBKeo/s1600/IMG_2354.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPQFfpbZ6M9GzpA_yDGNTp_yy166jhPy2G2v0H7F6g-jTnG9J2Iud6FruyymuHD53SUzVq0nliAXIt_gi3IG2z6UXQ1mnGE6Id2hoBPyELhOtuRCEuP_ka-3FVe1Fm3JMNLU7NGUeBKeo/s320/IMG_2354.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Half of my pots of "dry" paint from Citadel have dried up, ironically. And not in the "that's how they're supposed to be" kind of way, either. This one's still good, though. If yours went bad, or you don't have it, use or mix an off-white grey. I used this mainly to pick out areas further that the Dawnstone didn't. Mainly edge-work and limited raised area highlights.<br />
<br />
Step 5: Nuln Oil<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3U3rEGzLUee39p9RVYR_sPMH9R6GeDEZFQU_CHGWsMp-UteX1ycO0fDA0TsURTKcV-L1Aa3s0fVDqDtXOT3op5-w7WFUqYRstC4jg22RJucDjnOUf6rGqKx8V7FLf4BPJTB-htsxvVaM/s1600/IMG_2355.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3U3rEGzLUee39p9RVYR_sPMH9R6GeDEZFQU_CHGWsMp-UteX1ycO0fDA0TsURTKcV-L1Aa3s0fVDqDtXOT3op5-w7WFUqYRstC4jg22RJucDjnOUf6rGqKx8V7FLf4BPJTB-htsxvVaM/s320/IMG_2355.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is where the black armour effect is finalized. Douse the areas we've been working on. This will bring everything down to a suitably dark level.<br />
<br />
Step 6: Rakarth Flesh<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxjMIelXph2ye1ThGioI_w5tO8mv1CTM8cQDh0iQSqUF-7zqPGzoJww-dcjlOZoY96rPw6LbUdMXPcpMjqNL60SV6NNWch2sg5g9t1pX60FuWPWCv5er9jGf-SDh0VvaZxKv1V9WUCqlw/s1600/IMG_2356.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxjMIelXph2ye1ThGioI_w5tO8mv1CTM8cQDh0iQSqUF-7zqPGzoJww-dcjlOZoY96rPw6LbUdMXPcpMjqNL60SV6NNWch2sg5g9t1pX60FuWPWCv5er9jGf-SDh0VvaZxKv1V9WUCqlw/s320/IMG_2356.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Now that the black armour is done, I'm going to work on the daemon flesh effects. To note, I'm using the same technique I did earlier in the <a href="http://masterdarksol.blogspot.com/2013/07/step-by-step-possesseddaemon-skin.html" target="_blank">5-Step Daemon Skin</a> post. As this is a basecoat for the flesh, cover everything. Also note that I applied this to the skulls adorning his armour too. This is also a good bone basecoat.<br />
<br />
Step 7: Praxeti White<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhResc2kaYcL-5lUlNF2BItUYfsQt01qhIbWM-TiecEJcJTySoXYnos4jCxRkhWAQVZKRTjPAMdi0lD84A53CnqX6qhIZbBNmVii73stfSSMMRtyqag8WMJgqBhKh6-LfPlm18DJNqV3lc/s1600/IMG_2357.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhResc2kaYcL-5lUlNF2BItUYfsQt01qhIbWM-TiecEJcJTySoXYnos4jCxRkhWAQVZKRTjPAMdi0lD84A53CnqX6qhIZbBNmVii73stfSSMMRtyqag8WMJgqBhKh6-LfPlm18DJNqV3lc/s320/IMG_2357.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Another dry that survived the great dry-up. This was drybrushed over the Rakarth Flesh areas (minus the skulls, we'll get back to them later). This is all going to be under a wash, so I'm looking to get surface highlights that will show underneath. Usually if I skip this step, the model looks oddly flat.<br />
<br />
Step 8: Reikland Fleshshade<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrW6tvLbnYcm3kEjBQiUqDyzspUDgOd4H7oSSIpmDx7YYRxZ4jvoH1HeQJ4-YURd-55oxmFpEfidNBD8WYIKtNlx9ToXifDB0vkHEMuiHxLjBUwBPmR_Umjm83AgA2dEDua9M9ETZqwZY/s1600/IMG_2358.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrW6tvLbnYcm3kEjBQiUqDyzspUDgOd4H7oSSIpmDx7YYRxZ4jvoH1HeQJ4-YURd-55oxmFpEfidNBD8WYIKtNlx9ToXifDB0vkHEMuiHxLjBUwBPmR_Umjm83AgA2dEDua9M9ETZqwZY/s320/IMG_2358.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Were this some normal dude and I was just going for a caucasian skin-tone, this is about where I'd stop. Note that I've left the skulls alone; we'll get to those later. Also, I did not apply the wash entirely over the wing talons. I want a little bit of just the bone color up there at the tips.<br />
<br />
Step 9: Druchii Violet<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhInaCaU21BZEru6Ghyphenhyphen_VJ1g78iL9SVpMuIfqO-SO0p0KYXcoiapVkzwvh4f_WOXddSZLCkiSyDMw9d-sX3T4TKXo3n7x67nlIO72ulPpNuhzK62rZqwX_h72BzO_R6bh9nhVETOevQpMk/s1600/IMG_2359.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhInaCaU21BZEru6Ghyphenhyphen_VJ1g78iL9SVpMuIfqO-SO0p0KYXcoiapVkzwvh4f_WOXddSZLCkiSyDMw9d-sX3T4TKXo3n7x67nlIO72ulPpNuhzK62rZqwX_h72BzO_R6bh9nhVETOevQpMk/s320/IMG_2359.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I aimed to get this mostly in crevices, and keep it away from tips of things, like his cheekbones, horn tips, finger tips, etc. You want some of that fleshtone to show through.<br />
<br />
Step 10: Nuln Oil<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTud8D4NexPWRLz55cFnxtSGoV1pPz-OHuYNL6e4cRqgoMe7-dHGl6y0bHoYX0V-ecb1n_l8emFudQwDDLqv3LLVQZy9Oey_UXkXAQMaYjB6_sESsJtfIOLcXFNqZ8eTo8bL6m26Kqo1I/s1600/IMG_2360.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTud8D4NexPWRLz55cFnxtSGoV1pPz-OHuYNL6e4cRqgoMe7-dHGl6y0bHoYX0V-ecb1n_l8emFudQwDDLqv3LLVQZy9Oey_UXkXAQMaYjB6_sESsJtfIOLcXFNqZ8eTo8bL6m26Kqo1I/s320/IMG_2360.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Like with the previous step, I went for crevices, only more so. I want some of the purple to show through so that this is a gradient from nuln to druchii to reikland. Also, anywhere where the flesh touches the black armour, I hit with Nuln oil, to attempt to blend the line between armour and flesh.<br />
<br />
Now let's talk about the wings, because they are pretty much their own subject here:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYM7ixTC_QfnXrIEkCmN37TfS3HkkqwXlYWU9YpgX8wXZoHZoCXUvTY6HB8BBxsDk8IPhNXd0NjSLpOqXNStK3wEcrw9DZ5SuII8HbYtk5MCqvIndB-oqCNvFo9QEkk9BSQ1RlY2_ASN4/s1600/IMG_2361.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYM7ixTC_QfnXrIEkCmN37TfS3HkkqwXlYWU9YpgX8wXZoHZoCXUvTY6HB8BBxsDk8IPhNXd0NjSLpOqXNStK3wEcrw9DZ5SuII8HbYtk5MCqvIndB-oqCNvFo9QEkk9BSQ1RlY2_ASN4/s320/IMG_2361.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The actual limbs and crevices got both the purple and black washes, as you can see. The flaps in between got less, so that there's a clear contrast. Along the flaps, I used the gashed crevices as guides for where to streak the purple wash across. I want those to look kind of like stretch marks. When it came time for the Nuln Oil, I made little streaks, trying not to put as much down as the purple. When that was done, I finished off by stippling a few blotches here and there with the Nuln Oil just to break up the surface a bit more and take away some of that uniformity.<br />
<br />
Step 11: Balthasar Gold<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw7bMegzQWg7G4XiQYyw7f1Ap2foq_zPFuClfsdLtruZx3INOrOzZ0MuseaDpNPWAvAuHygJsRIcg6EELF80IUGgF6XIW7HCGtcTusdPnxCci7kGg_QZahoL49Ig8s18zkDY7o-K-D4zA/s1600/IMG_2362.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw7bMegzQWg7G4XiQYyw7f1Ap2foq_zPFuClfsdLtruZx3INOrOzZ0MuseaDpNPWAvAuHygJsRIcg6EELF80IUGgF6XIW7HCGtcTusdPnxCci7kGg_QZahoL49Ig8s18zkDY7o-K-D4zA/s320/IMG_2362.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is the basecoat for all that gold trim. A nice brown metallic.<br />
<br />
Step 12: Gehenna's Gold<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHn-05gHcnHJxnv4Nc2n7eRUL3AIW1jMw0rO3r8a98KDQOXAkOtGn1-Qx-vnFbEx45lCPFZ2CiKu52BuwxOxEgrO78CfkPnzC-ZPxTjH_6nGXW7RKDFfPZd82-QZ0AEP1HXGsw4yj5fYA/s1600/IMG_2363.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHn-05gHcnHJxnv4Nc2n7eRUL3AIW1jMw0rO3r8a98KDQOXAkOtGn1-Qx-vnFbEx45lCPFZ2CiKu52BuwxOxEgrO78CfkPnzC-ZPxTjH_6nGXW7RKDFfPZd82-QZ0AEP1HXGsw4yj5fYA/s320/IMG_2363.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This paint pot is temperamental for me. I always need to shake it up more than any other, as it likes to separate into a thin red layer on top, and the actual gold on the bottom. It should come out like an orange gold. The idea here with the different layers is to build up to something that looks better for all the layers underneath, like a candy-apple-red paint job on a car.<br />
<br />
Step 13: Auric Armour Gold<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfjlj4itCA6XhGEou2Ac05WIUWMOjJrfmaQwh4qeFxvdx0sLzKhoZAgJF7j8zd9pUeR_p_xLwvAfpOBEeQeRJTjZL3BNnc7km1DAq6VrV6NrwaR_axmoRtBgh6JDdPaj6io6jlETOiX-g/s1600/IMG_2364.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfjlj4itCA6XhGEou2Ac05WIUWMOjJrfmaQwh4qeFxvdx0sLzKhoZAgJF7j8zd9pUeR_p_xLwvAfpOBEeQeRJTjZL3BNnc7km1DAq6VrV6NrwaR_axmoRtBgh6JDdPaj6io6jlETOiX-g/s320/IMG_2364.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is where I try to not cover up all of the previous step, but still most of it.<br />
<br />
Step 14: Runefang Steel<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ5BptbZhMOX1LAO6_4kDjiYDiZOR10EDbXM3xeYYDGYw_OsvlYOuZZWnekj8yZwl4y8Aa_RluhrZI8S3AM96p2Jq9qOhsAgzOLtwxclfDhRP_zlbpMzksVfEyqU8RurYM9XInYSzcQSs/s1600/IMG_2365.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ5BptbZhMOX1LAO6_4kDjiYDiZOR10EDbXM3xeYYDGYw_OsvlYOuZZWnekj8yZwl4y8Aa_RluhrZI8S3AM96p2Jq9qOhsAgzOLtwxclfDhRP_zlbpMzksVfEyqU8RurYM9XInYSzcQSs/s320/IMG_2365.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
In my previous <a href="http://masterdarksol.blogspot.com/2012/11/5-step-gold.html" target="_blank">5-Step Gold</a> tutorial I suggested a dry paint highlight (Griffon) after the wash. That pot dried up, so I'm doing a different technique to get a similar effect. I'm using Runefang Steel as my drybrushed highlight... but because of how bright it is, we're putting it on before the wash.<br />
<br />
Step 15: Agrax Earthshade<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMVpGNbWwKvy6CMq2-7ZB7oJAzUe2zRxDQMKtEbHwMS5Myo-SfKMLIDE3DhNdk_vB1TXajWt-hnXtuC1pr7TgF_5eInJ0J_hGoYu2F7MXTh1Mt-wAxnAocQe5AhQ7cnhVj2DebqDqxwM/s1600/IMG_2366.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMVpGNbWwKvy6CMq2-7ZB7oJAzUe2zRxDQMKtEbHwMS5Myo-SfKMLIDE3DhNdk_vB1TXajWt-hnXtuC1pr7TgF_5eInJ0J_hGoYu2F7MXTh1Mt-wAxnAocQe5AhQ7cnhVj2DebqDqxwM/s320/IMG_2366.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Two things happening here. I doused the gold parts to finish them off... and hit those skulls that had been left alone for a while.<br />
<br />
Step 16: Ushabti Bone<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYEGC-h8YRil7XzdT_llWBmdbwBnb82-fIlu_FQxogtAacLJvyvwYG493-Ou_0z4sle0zEJxdByGoznn0CM3TNbMfC7zdpr7Ivp0x-aQsRffRvN6dLFjoJnuOFp_Wsn_hTPfyg3EAQghk/s1600/IMG_2367.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYEGC-h8YRil7XzdT_llWBmdbwBnb82-fIlu_FQxogtAacLJvyvwYG493-Ou_0z4sle0zEJxdByGoznn0CM3TNbMfC7zdpr7Ivp0x-aQsRffRvN6dLFjoJnuOFp_Wsn_hTPfyg3EAQghk/s320/IMG_2367.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I'm picking out places to highlight on the skulls, and also carefully picking out his teeth. The teeth were done easiest by drying the brush off, then using the side of the brush along his teeth.<br />
<br />
Step 17: Screaming Skull<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5OlcVXQVz_8l8Rc3bPKv6A3lOby_AksBz0GRZwKdkr5DtLiG4cy4PXme96kbJI623eVtKkJOF9q68Ga_JqLhajjN_VqsykEz_E0XnTk_53gpSn-YYyw31uonGNHl_y8hjLHHdwpKWERw/s1600/IMG_2368.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5OlcVXQVz_8l8Rc3bPKv6A3lOby_AksBz0GRZwKdkr5DtLiG4cy4PXme96kbJI623eVtKkJOF9q68Ga_JqLhajjN_VqsykEz_E0XnTk_53gpSn-YYyw31uonGNHl_y8hjLHHdwpKWERw/s320/IMG_2368.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The final highlight for those skulls.<br />
<br />
Step 18: Averland Sunset<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwWSi6FBG0Okp-w03XsJqAvVgHzFB6-3hrvyHG7L4X0_nRLwjPf7d0PoITbJWy0tu0pbEDpXReS8tkCQCANiSbpus2-X8BDeclFVyzSWXVXe1at0fqmIIMrzcdCAPUYZIxWPhPfQNRMv0/s1600/IMG_2369.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwWSi6FBG0Okp-w03XsJqAvVgHzFB6-3hrvyHG7L4X0_nRLwjPf7d0PoITbJWy0tu0pbEDpXReS8tkCQCANiSbpus2-X8BDeclFVyzSWXVXe1at0fqmIIMrzcdCAPUYZIxWPhPfQNRMv0/s320/IMG_2369.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
OK, the vision I had for his sword is kind of similar to the effect I did on <a href="http://masterdarksol.blogspot.com/2009/09/painted-skulltaker_28.html" target="_blank">Skulltaker's sword</a>: a kind of darkened glowing blade, like it was filled with lava. For that, I mainly used washes to darken the flats... but this sword has runes carved in it, and I want those to be brighter than the flats. Because of that, washes will be difficult to keep out of those crevices. <br />
<br />
Step 19: Flash Gitz Yellow<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcrPTR_dg1CT0hVXHQHe1-Q6hv9RM49Te0CSErR0_vcsRlefl0AppEdCJxPnwT_4NBuWsCMUeoW6yj9BNoiZSmTjH92vCJF3IwWNk3o2d1Jye4SbChFrk009BOCPSOwvOb6-mHp-PY1VQ/s1600/IMG_2370.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcrPTR_dg1CT0hVXHQHe1-Q6hv9RM49Te0CSErR0_vcsRlefl0AppEdCJxPnwT_4NBuWsCMUeoW6yj9BNoiZSmTjH92vCJF3IwWNk3o2d1Jye4SbChFrk009BOCPSOwvOb6-mHp-PY1VQ/s320/IMG_2370.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I'm only caring about getting this in those cracks.<br />
<br />
Step 20: Evil Sunz Scarlet<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8XHl2Phi_AmyfoZ48UtXzWxPBvCmvLJR2BnI8meTEp-oiGbZvgYKBryKoTFtDI_VOZhifVTJxt29scx96qx6kSJ7UV-mZE8rNbzMrh2v9pNBy4j2_Vg_HXRxKle1INkGuCdZCNyh9tuQ/s1600/IMG_2371.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8XHl2Phi_AmyfoZ48UtXzWxPBvCmvLJR2BnI8meTEp-oiGbZvgYKBryKoTFtDI_VOZhifVTJxt29scx96qx6kSJ7UV-mZE8rNbzMrh2v9pNBy4j2_Vg_HXRxKle1INkGuCdZCNyh9tuQ/s320/IMG_2371.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
After initially drybrushing around the runes, I covered the rest of the blade. The rest of the effect will be done with Nuln Oil to give the effect I want.<br />
<br />
Step 21: Nuln Oil<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtEvuEeAS0IkypGuXFCwF-pXnXedilkjAFOGQADfsiqbMgX619ppBYLYCGb5LT26ErsXn3IKCucYc5wknosm6YMhLk5IebSnQX_QaoCSjMnTnMorj2RuFcaywZo5O7ayeHZn4r03xWt9s/s1600/IMG_2372.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtEvuEeAS0IkypGuXFCwF-pXnXedilkjAFOGQADfsiqbMgX619ppBYLYCGb5LT26ErsXn3IKCucYc5wknosm6YMhLk5IebSnQX_QaoCSjMnTnMorj2RuFcaywZo5O7ayeHZn4r03xWt9s/s320/IMG_2372.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This was a very careful step. I placed wash on the blade in blotches, touching here and there to put a bead of black wash down. The blotchy effect is great, and at the time I thought it was still to bright and moved on to a second application. I now think I should have stopped at this step, honestly. The mid-tones look better.<br />
<br />
Step 22: Nuln Oil<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ5IJv0Zz32sCjGpTuEgtddgNybgsQb0TUMaavXAuH6ZJaZuReHphbEX-OefvD0vcMGty-7s14st7PbyE3LOVQPFa59l5IsdhY3YVgT5MNMQCwA4oF1ZZSf2N-2x-oKltby_bqT-6eCa4/s1600/IMG_2373.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ5IJv0Zz32sCjGpTuEgtddgNybgsQb0TUMaavXAuH6ZJaZuReHphbEX-OefvD0vcMGty-7s14st7PbyE3LOVQPFa59l5IsdhY3YVgT5MNMQCwA4oF1ZZSf2N-2x-oKltby_bqT-6eCa4/s320/IMG_2373.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Here you can see what I mean. I went in to darken the blade further, and I'm not sure it was an improvement.<br />
<br />
Step 23: Leadbelcher<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCb0pDDbhoBP-wymMBZBtW6r128Av1_q_4cr9L70L7g9ZtK_A8zFre_5wBGM9QhtvgE5dk7GE_I2arJdMzqQ8VDdlwb1S0rpFpZpS8r88dI1-kptL0PFE88i7pPVGJUcMRC8NNv0nZIm0/s1600/IMG_2374.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCb0pDDbhoBP-wymMBZBtW6r128Av1_q_4cr9L70L7g9ZtK_A8zFre_5wBGM9QhtvgE5dk7GE_I2arJdMzqQ8VDdlwb1S0rpFpZpS8r88dI1-kptL0PFE88i7pPVGJUcMRC8NNv0nZIm0/s320/IMG_2374.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
There are a couple metallic bits on this guy. Chains hanging from various areas, a Necron's head tied to his waist, and some cabling spilling out of his guts like intestines. All coated with the Leadbelcher.<br />
<br />
Step 24: Agrax Earthshade<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOlohJfkgbzbf_uf9hfCcWY4VESaoQ4_PwEDvYDBAWE90crQBGxekwyBLBirvQux7wJgKgk7wxg7ZgE2v3vBA7_nJAmbgUZS5oBzuey0HoZ7FhhA72Rzwzk2t3HiKsZ3a73rggrK3vzRo/s1600/IMG_2375.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOlohJfkgbzbf_uf9hfCcWY4VESaoQ4_PwEDvYDBAWE90crQBGxekwyBLBirvQux7wJgKgk7wxg7ZgE2v3vBA7_nJAmbgUZS5oBzuey0HoZ7FhhA72Rzwzk2t3HiKsZ3a73rggrK3vzRo/s320/IMG_2375.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This was applied heavily to the metal areas. I want it to have depth, but also be a bit dirty.<br />
<br />
Step 25: Macragge Blue<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqC9Mp3O3TYSyWyFna97D2TTupp_MhtP1naRkuZ4OyqX9oh_RdvJPBZeAkRsH_ibXOpyPh0HZVKGrzFz9LaMO1cFVJVjiurFLVWKeRC3wxL1g8AUwEreKuE0WxthyHrpXxRggFp9Xrt6U/s1600/IMG_2376.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqC9Mp3O3TYSyWyFna97D2TTupp_MhtP1naRkuZ4OyqX9oh_RdvJPBZeAkRsH_ibXOpyPh0HZVKGrzFz9LaMO1cFVJVjiurFLVWKeRC3wxL1g8AUwEreKuE0WxthyHrpXxRggFp9Xrt6U/s320/IMG_2376.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
For the Space marine helmet on his belt. My daemon prince's favored prey come in Ultramarines flavor.<br />
<br />
Step 26: Calgar Blue<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtizZ4extu141kr8vJdtJMHFFsCOXhiRUAeM2SHFeeVdRW2r2bm9fIRNMZ5CuiSmK2TJmsQGuT7eqYnBVM0YJ-qqmkYcnBwxX6cwE0d9BnLpXyTCZlbfWOBQRu5H5e6uzL297M67qpggA/s1600/IMG_2377.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtizZ4extu141kr8vJdtJMHFFsCOXhiRUAeM2SHFeeVdRW2r2bm9fIRNMZ5CuiSmK2TJmsQGuT7eqYnBVM0YJ-qqmkYcnBwxX6cwE0d9BnLpXyTCZlbfWOBQRu5H5e6uzL297M67qpggA/s320/IMG_2377.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
A quick highlight for that helmet.<br />
<br />
Step 27: Agrax Earthshade<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhajzgaArHN8SBtkiRCxWGUZiAXwqZ2RJnReH8dvVUAIk1rV5e_g9pB1B77fHCwFHigGmCPyUaPIVRQGCGG3VraXUPQ5dhH1cBPPa5i-Vn9Zs3NqXbW8ycU52g8EzDvnZ6IjZsMW5ZTOTs/s1600/IMG_2378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhajzgaArHN8SBtkiRCxWGUZiAXwqZ2RJnReH8dvVUAIk1rV5e_g9pB1B77fHCwFHigGmCPyUaPIVRQGCGG3VraXUPQ5dhH1cBPPa5i-Vn9Zs3NqXbW8ycU52g8EzDvnZ6IjZsMW5ZTOTs/s320/IMG_2378.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
For the helmet. I'm not looking to make the helmet look the same as one worn by an actual Ultramarine. This one's been there for a bit, worn down, and dirtier.<br />
<br />
Step 28: Tamiya Clear Red<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzdm0yqLtfgIVwY5KcRT45S0WL7ZzNPcUBugKEg0Hu69vXzq0j-i3SMtu4GCFfi0NIZs43ldn2ORzK6nb8dBS3313weMLy373F7OJpzHk78u1ke0EqncYikztbUM7QgBhHAwoBtyVKqT0/s1600/IMG_2379.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzdm0yqLtfgIVwY5KcRT45S0WL7ZzNPcUBugKEg0Hu69vXzq0j-i3SMtu4GCFfi0NIZs43ldn2ORzK6nb8dBS3313weMLy373F7OJpzHk78u1ke0EqncYikztbUM7QgBhHAwoBtyVKqT0/s320/IMG_2379.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Blood. Tamiya's clear red is easily the best thing I've seen for blood and gore. Nothing in the Citadel line compares. This was applied on the armour around the skulls, near the tip of the sword, and around that weird gun-like opening on the back of his left gauntlet. I imagine it is some kind of projectile weapon, one that sprays blood and daemonic ichor. There are also a few places where this was splattered on. Easiest way to do that is to get a big gob of it on your brush, hold it an inch from where on the model you want it splattered, then blow the glob off the brush. Messy, but it works. I was cued on to this tip via another blog (<a href="http://taleofpainters.blogspot.com/2012/11/tutorial-how-to-paint-realistic-blood.html" target="_blank">Tale of Painters</a>) and thought to give it a try, so this was my first shot at it.<br />
<br />
Step 29: Ulthuan Grey<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk577B-Utb3BNw_C1crXAM8kN1Gd51RSuA6Gs3eeayU_j8C31AfoA8XZlbGXsjhRJWD_6MrnGT9BO8CVK-oibsk3aYQc_MG3T0e4710oMYZTr19yHsd0_PGXWFEKoFCMYpcmUEHlD1EMQ/s1600/IMG_2380.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk577B-Utb3BNw_C1crXAM8kN1Gd51RSuA6Gs3eeayU_j8C31AfoA8XZlbGXsjhRJWD_6MrnGT9BO8CVK-oibsk3aYQc_MG3T0e4710oMYZTr19yHsd0_PGXWFEKoFCMYpcmUEHlD1EMQ/s320/IMG_2380.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The last real detail I'm going to hit here is some of the eyes in his armor. This is the base. While I had it out, I used it to paint two pinpoints as his actual eyes. I like my daemon eyes to be beady and small. It makes them look so much more sinister, IMO.<br />
<br />
Step 30: Yriel Yellow<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOBgfYPQA1iyQLx22_y3xytKhvAY5-hYUdIS8cz1UY7yvC2vrnaGFIdMniXUX8siu_nx9TGT-XLfJViyR9ZcP1Amjx9YXtSMWgkvQOSMGTq9c4T4-2kmp7z8TDMPqhy9_QafsMA42DQKE/s1600/IMG_2381.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOBgfYPQA1iyQLx22_y3xytKhvAY5-hYUdIS8cz1UY7yvC2vrnaGFIdMniXUX8siu_nx9TGT-XLfJViyR9ZcP1Amjx9YXtSMWgkvQOSMGTq9c4T4-2kmp7z8TDMPqhy9_QafsMA42DQKE/s320/IMG_2381.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I applied this to the middle iris area for the eye.<br />
<br />
Step 31: Abaddon Black<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-2L3CTEkGSyMw4hMuay43iWIbBJCYlWiHV_-uYQFYANoxGeRPkNwdTGuEo3JpOYxwMQrAqr86g2CCC0FNWEb5wjEbVV3GyBT7-K0H7m554OFny2jnoApI2N2iHHw9oPyg4SYMNsMFsM/s1600/IMG_2382.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-2L3CTEkGSyMw4hMuay43iWIbBJCYlWiHV_-uYQFYANoxGeRPkNwdTGuEo3JpOYxwMQrAqr86g2CCC0FNWEb5wjEbVV3GyBT7-K0H7m554OFny2jnoApI2N2iHHw9oPyg4SYMNsMFsM/s320/IMG_2382.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I applied this as a slitted pupil.<br />
<br />
Step 32: Bloodletter glaze<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRgjoQSCH3R1FZeWLLmzpm4Z2OaBc9CtogMeUEfOVMAWQw7rkoEO9CTmtM_mm22JgngS_2JNPzjoXbiGDNMGxHSzV7sAt9Lt944usBDEOTtrVLkKb2xkgbCNKD4b7_xz0dsxI9q1xnnXY/s1600/IMG_2383.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRgjoQSCH3R1FZeWLLmzpm4Z2OaBc9CtogMeUEfOVMAWQw7rkoEO9CTmtM_mm22JgngS_2JNPzjoXbiGDNMGxHSzV7sAt9Lt944usBDEOTtrVLkKb2xkgbCNKD4b7_xz0dsxI9q1xnnXY/s320/IMG_2383.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Covered the eye. I was going for an irritated look.<br />
<br />
Step 33: White Scar<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYBOGtuIHxaTUKGC0hzhvCypL_G_1eQK_C2V90SmYHT0QnGAtoUSQJdoH7OOpbH7idtPao4TBE37YSC3ZR6EqsQb2U0ZR2Nm52kD27-3S-BywyH-b1p17xwG5KtLO4TK0lUCZfabQ6cU8/s1600/IMG_2384.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYBOGtuIHxaTUKGC0hzhvCypL_G_1eQK_C2V90SmYHT0QnGAtoUSQJdoH7OOpbH7idtPao4TBE37YSC3ZR6EqsQb2U0ZR2Nm52kD27-3S-BywyH-b1p17xwG5KtLO4TK0lUCZfabQ6cU8/s320/IMG_2384.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Last touch was a small line along the upper edge for light reflection.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3HS1vMQkgRYpAHV1SqgjEwz9i6SM9CiS__Pmv9e0ycfxFq0cYBoomkcg2gQCIV7Qmo73CI1tERWPUo0CjwgW_EiCI0xz8z613RcVlIEdjhsqyRrHyaH2Q5EgHQ7lC3LpwdgHdiE_EHG4/s1600/IMG_2385.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3HS1vMQkgRYpAHV1SqgjEwz9i6SM9CiS__Pmv9e0ycfxFq0cYBoomkcg2gQCIV7Qmo73CI1tERWPUo0CjwgW_EiCI0xz8z613RcVlIEdjhsqyRrHyaH2Q5EgHQ7lC3LpwdgHdiE_EHG4/s320/IMG_2385.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There it is, the model's done. I based him up to match with the rest of my Chaos Space Marines (sand, brown wash, orange drybrush). With the base being so large, I added a few pieces of slate to break it up and keep it interesting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnFeT-5JlbCbYMgF7WyNR4Ch6Wou89apxd8A3rck3Rc1xwoxaWUwiJxphwDrs6rOTMInrEl9ET2gWsv1OkYIsZohlqgoIy-HemZu24ZkH5PQnq6uJOHnP7H9kzQHVDN6kAmccSuHTdaFY/s1600/IMG_2386.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnFeT-5JlbCbYMgF7WyNR4Ch6Wou89apxd8A3rck3Rc1xwoxaWUwiJxphwDrs6rOTMInrEl9ET2gWsv1OkYIsZohlqgoIy-HemZu24ZkH5PQnq6uJOHnP7H9kzQHVDN6kAmccSuHTdaFY/s320/IMG_2386.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

I'd love to know what you all think. Helpful? Worthwhile? Interesting, at the very least?<br />

<br />
So much of what made Warhammer 40K compelling to me was the fluff/setting. The models are cool, sure, but I got involved back in 2nd edition; The models were OK then, but not great. It was the fluff that held shit together, that made me want to act out battles between squads of stoic Dark Angels and a lithe and deadly strike-force of Eldar. There was a serious cool-factor to the idea of that universe: Humanity in a technological dark age, having lost technology they once had, superstition and mysticism prevailing, the empire crumbling under the weight of bureaucracy...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
So tell me where this fits in?<br />

Terminator armour was the end-all-be-all of the Space Marine arsenal. The technology to even make them was lost, making those they had left precious and holy. So what the fuck is this? Where did this come from? Did the Ultramarines just happen to have some of these just sitting around in some darkened corner of the armory, concealed by cobwebs? Did Marneus Calgar trip over one in an unused hallway and exclaim "Oh yeah, these things! How could I have forgotten?"<br />
<br />
I feel disappointed, more than anything. I'd already basically walked away from GW, but I can't help but know that if I were still in, I'd be in a rage. My first army was Dark Angels, and often I felt that the DA get shafted in comparison to what inevitably came in the later 'vanilla' codices. I'm also willing to bet that any other chapter-specific codex to come out now will also include these, leaving the Dark Angels in the lurch. Some of these recent decisions at GW feel to me like they lacked thought as to how these additions/changes affect the setting as a whole; like they're forfeiting that compelling setting in favor of cool-toy-mode. It feels less like a decision made to evolve/refine the Space Marines and who they are in the setting, and more a decision to give SM a large mech because other armies had mechs. They made a cool mech for the Tau, then one for the Eldar (neither of which really made sense to me, either)... and now there's a Space Marine mech-thing. Only thing that could make it worse is if it were somehow larger than the Riptide/WraithKnight.<br />
<br />
I feel like this is the punchline to a joke, rather than a serious product.<br />

With that, I have completed all 7 of the CCC Yellowjackets squad. This guy is the most recent addition of the team, apparently his ability is to open a base-width hole in any fortification/wall. Sounds cool, but situational at best.<br />
